Monday, April 16 Depart the Hyatt and head to Frank Lloyd Wright' Darwin Martin House for a tour. You will begin by surveying the exterior of the Martin House Complex as your docent illustrates Frank Lloyd Wright's genius in creating intricate architectural harmonies. Next, you will tour the first floor spaces of the Martin House, exploring the "domestic symphony" Wright created for the Martin family. The tour will proceed down the pergola and into the lush, plant-filled conservatory with the Nike in its focal niche. Finally, you'll visit the extraordinary carriage house and Wisteria Museum Shop to conclude the tour. Then it's off to the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Fontana Boat House. The designs for the Darwin Martin House and the rowing boathouse came off Wright's drafting table within months of one another. The design of the Darwin Martin House and the Larkin Administration Building was fresh in Wright's mind when he drew the design of the boathouse. One look at the North and South elevations of the boathouse will quickly reveal the similarity between the hierarchy of piers that Wright employed in his earlier works and that he used again in this boathouse; for its north and south elevations echo the Martin House rhythms. A magnificent re-creation in an equally beautiful location. Lunch follows at Templeton Landing, Buffalo's premier waterfront restaurant. Located at the Erie Basin Marina where Lake Erie feeds into the Niagara River, The Landing offers a great waterfront view. Then you will head to the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens for a guided tour. The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is a national historic site, education center and tourist destination full of exotic horticulture treasures. Although there are some plants native to our temperate region, most are native to tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Made up of three glass domes and nine greenhouses, this breathtaking conservatory is situated on 11.4 acres at the entrance to Buffalo's historic South Park.
Tuesday, April 17 Depart the Hyatt and head to the Made In America store, the only general merchandise store in the country that sells 100% American Made Products, down to the packaging. Owner Mark Andol will meet the group and explain the store's mission, restoring U.S. manufacturing jobs by providing American consumers a brick & mortar store and e-commerce site that guarantees that each product sold is entirely American in materials and labor. Next it's off to the Roycroft campus for a tour are rich with facts and fascinating stories about the past, present and future of this authentic Arts and Crafts community. The Campus, the birthplace of the Arts and Crafts in America, is the best preserved and most complete complex of buildings remaining in the United States of the "guilds" that evolved as centers of craftsmanship and philosophy during the late 19th century. Author, lecturer, and entrepreneur Elbert Hubbard began to develop the Campus in 1897. It was one of several utopian societies that formed during the Arts and Crafts movement in response to the shoddy, mass-produced goods of the Industrial Age. The campus would become a Mecca for master craftsmen and a gathering place for notable artists, authors, philosophers, social reformers, and power brokers. The Campus, designated a National Historic Landmark district (NHL) in 1986, contains 9 of the original 14 structures including the Inn, the Chapel, the Print Shop, the Furniture Shop, and the Copper Shop. So come visit and discover the rebirth of the Roycroft Campus as if Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters never left. Following lunch you will visit Vidler's 5 & 10, an old-fashioned 5 and 10 featuring a wide variety of merchandise from nostalgic candy, novelty toys, and kitchen gadgets to the newest items for the recreational shopper. Truly a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. Then it's back to the hotel. |
